Every year the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northern West Virginia gathers to renew their dedication to the important mission of Make-A-Wish - granting wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
A retreat gives the board a chance to connect and make decisions that will direct the chapter for the year to come as well as long range plans. It sets aside time to truly focus on the essential role they play in providing policy and fiduciary controls and oversight.
Our board assumes many other functions as well. Directors play vital roles in fund raising events such as chairing an event; they are prepared when called upon to interact with the community where they reside and they continually are looking as ways to engage peers in the Make-A-Wish mission as well as being a support partner. Assisting the President/CEO in daily decision making is a valued contribution by the board; they offer a wealth of disciplines that provides expertise and knowledge. In general, board members provide not only great guidance; they continue to function in volunteer roles far beyond attending a meeting. They bring a value that is unmatched. As a chapter we could not function without them, and to them we extend our appreciation for their sincere dedication and devotion to our mission.
Join Destination Joy® presented by LAY'S®, the Make-A-Wish Foundation's® national campaign to raise resources to make every wish happen. In 2007, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® granted 13,000 wishes - one wish every 40 minutes. But that's only half of the 27,000 children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition annually in the United States.
Destination Joy® presented by LAY'S® is designed to secure additional money and resources to help grant every wish. For example, the Foundation uses more than 350 million airline miles each year but could use 2.2 billion per year. This gap illustrates our continuing need for resources, and that's why we've created this national effort.
Destination Joy® presented by LAY'S® launched June 3-12 and includes significant media exposure with celebrity spokespeople and wish children, along with Make-A-Wish® chapter events nationwide. We are asking supporters to visit nwestva.wish.org to make a financial contribution, donate frequent flier miles and hotel loyalty points, and volunteer time and resources.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northern West Virginia's mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northern West Virginia has been granting wishes since 1989 serving the northern 32 counties in West Virginia. See Where to Find Us for specifics.
In 1980, Chris Greicius was a 7-year-old boy being treated for leukemia. Whenever he saw a police officer, he saw everything he wanted to be. Law enforcement officers heard about Chris' wish to be a police officer and responded to the call. A police helicopter flew him to headquarters for a tour, a ride in a patrol car and a ceremony making him the first-ever honorary state patrolman in Arizona history. They also presented him a custom-tailored uniform, motorcycle helmet, campaign hat and the motorcycle wings he earned on his own battery-powered bike. Many of those responsible for fulfilling Chris' wish wanted to do the same for other children with life-threatening medical conditions and founded the Make-A-Wish Foundation® in November 1980 .
